This is Portugal’s pink rococo-style masterpiece. It began modestly in the 17th century, but was expanded enormously and, like Louis XIV’s Versailles, was surrounded by spectacular gardens. HM Queen Elizabeth and several former US presidents have stayed there during state visits. Its magnificently sumptuous rooms may be visited, but photography is not allowed.
