Cascais town hall
Sightseeing in Portugal picture - This little fishing village has been settled over the centuries by Romans, Moors, and invading Spaniards. It became a self-governing municipality in 1364. In 1870 King Luis I established his summer residence here, and of course the aristocracy followed suit. Today it is a bedroom community, joined to Lisbon by the countrys first electric railway (1926). There is an intact military citadel/fortress, and you can still visit a palace which features, among other items, an outstanding library of rare books.
