The San Diego Zoo was formed when exotic animals were abandoned after the Panama-California Exposition of 1915. From it's humble beginnings, the zoo has grown to be one of the world's largest, housing over 4000 animals from over 800 species, and is run by a nonprofit agency on 100 acres (0.4 square kilometers) of land leased from the city in Balboa Park.
