The first film was shot in Iran in 1896. 4 years later in 1900, feature films became one of the prime form of entertainment for the well-to-do of Iranian society. Due to religious impositions, it took much longer before mainstream Iranian society could freely enjoy this recreation. To mainstream society in old times the cinema represented moral corruption and Til this day one still jokingly say about someone smoking a cigarette - particularly women - "Today she's smoking - tomorrow she'll be going to the cinema". Today, Iran is a renowned producer of internationally acclaimed films and has recieved numerous prestigious international awards. Several of Iran's renowned film makers are women.
