Over the centuries since they were built and raised, time and the weather have taken their toll on these massive statues. Over the entire island, there are almost 900 moai, about 300 of which were once standing. All were toppled - by hurricanes, earthquakes and warring tribes. Some, like these, have been painstakingly rebuilt to stand as they did hundreds of years ago.
