Windermere is the largest lake in the lake district and Ullswater the second largest. The lake district as such comprises of about 80 small and big lakes. Beautiful lakes, lush green mountains and fields, cozy and sleepy towns with a very laid back attitude make this place very special and a must see.

We ambled into the lovely town of Ambleside at the northern tip of the Windermere lake. A beautiful town, Ambleside is a favourite base for hiking and biking. It has several shops, hotels, pubs and restaurants.

I felt that the town of Windermere is much more commercial than Ambleside and hence lot more tourists can be spotted in this town.

There are steamer services from both these towns and a steamer trip can offer some nice vies of the lake and the surrounding scenery.
