Lancaster is the county town of Lancashire county. The town has a long and interesting history which dates back to pre-Roman times. Lancaster is a small and charming place to visit and is a must see if you are on a journey from the south to the lake district.

The Norman castle is in very good condition and is still used as a court and a prison. The castle is famous for the trial of the Lancashire Witches. In 1612 some women were condemned and hanged at Lancaster castle for practising witchcraft. Although the castle is still largely in use a few places are open for the public.

The Priory church of St Mary which is next to the castle dates back to the 7th century AD.

Williamson Park and the Ashton Memorial look down upon the city of Lancaster and dominate the Lancaster skyline. The original Edwardian house in the park is now a butterfly house. The building with the dome is the Ashton Memorial. The Williamson park is beautiful and dense and walking through it is a pleasure.
