The surrounding foothills shelter it from the wind, snow and extreme cold of the higher Alps, and it’s the warmest place in all France. Menton has been supplying lemons and oranges to the rest of the country for 500 years: by the mid-1800s, there were some 90,000 citrus fruit trees. Today I believe it’s the only town in France where the streets are lined with orange trees. And look at those dozens of tour buses!
