Dec 2007. Ludlow (Pop approx 10,000)

I've been to Ludlow countless number of times as my father and stepmother live a few miles away in the country. Sadly, I never really took many photos of Ludlow on the assumption that I can always go back and take plenty the next time. However, just before emigrating to Australia, I thought it would be good to take a few. It was a bit of grey day around Christmas time but it was atmospheric. I took a few night shots with a tripod which generally worked reasonably well.

Ludlow is an exceptionally pretty town alongside England's fastest flowing river, The Teme. It has a nice castle ruin, which is in active use throughout the year, whether it is used for the Annual Food Festival, the mock Medieval fighting, outside theatre events, and so on.

Ludlow sits in the relatively little-known Marches area, which lies near the border of Wales south of Shrewsbury. It comprises of gently undulating hills and rivers with surprisingly lofty vistas from vantage points like Clee Hill and the Long Mynd.

Food is the big thing here and Ludlow prides itself in growing and producing the food locally where possible. And believe me, the food quality is world-class. Restaurants are a bit hit-and-miss but there are fantastic places to eat in Ludlow as well.

Ludlow's weak point is that it has become a victim of its own success with wealthier retirees moving into the area frequently outpricing the working locals out of the area. It is not a problem unique to Ludlow of course, but I thought I should mention it!

And yes, for those who have read Bill Bryson's 'Notes From A Small Island', there is, indeed, a Cats Protection League! And no, I have never been inside it.

And one other thing, the traffic wardens here are legendary for issuing parking tickets to the unwary. You've been warned!
