There are 8 rathas in Mamallapuram. [“Rathas” are monolithic temples, are called ‘rathas’ because they resemble typical temple processional chariots.] The 5 unique rathas in this cluster adjacent to the Shore Temple, date back to 630-668, & were carved out of one large boulder. The rathas were named after the five Pandava brothers, hence the group’s name "Panch Pandava Ratha" (the five chariots of the Pandavas).
