On the last sightseeing day of my 2006 Hawaii trip, I explored sites in Honolulu, including the USS Arizona Memorial. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and severely damaged or sunk 21 vessels in the US Pacific Fleet, including the battleship USS Arizona. A memorial to those killed and wounded that day now spans the sunked Arizona, which continues to be the final resting place of many who died that day. A visitor center at the site provides views of the memorial and other vessels in Pearl Harbor, a movie, and a museum. Visitors may be taken by boat over to the actual museum.
