We spent an evening learning about the Maori culture. James was designated our chief and had to learn the traditional Maori greeting. This fellow is welcoming us in a traditional powhiri - Mai Ora. We also learned about the traditional tattoos of the Maori. The men have their thighs tattooed when they are married to remind them of the pain that their wives will endure during child birth. They are cut with a sharp rock and then the wounds are packed with mud and dog dung. Many people got infections from these tattoos.
