Auroville, a would-be Utopian “city with a soul”, an off-shoot of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram* in the city, was founded in 1968 & is located about 12 kms north of town. *[The ashram was founded by Sri Aurobindo in 1926. He then decided to withdraw from public view & appointed his co-worker Mirra Alfassa, thereafter known as ‘The Mother’ in charge of the ashram. She’s the one who founded Auroville in 1968.
