Our travels this year took us to part of Indochina – Laos and Cambodia. We went first to Thailand and reacquainted ourselves with Bangkok – its ornate Grand Palace and the klongs (canals). From Bangkok we took a slow overnight train north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and crossed the Mekong into Laos. Our guide told us the expression ‘Vietnam plants the rice, Cambodia watches it grow and Laos listens to it grow’ – such is the laidback nature of the delightful Laotians.
