The temple complex is massive - it encompasses an area of over 150 acres & has 7 nested enclosures (“prakaras”) whose thick walls are pierced by towering gates (gopuras) along the four cardinal axes leading from the central shrine. The perimeter of the outer wall is over 3kms long. The walls demarcate enclosures within enclosures, each more sacred than the next, with access to the inner-most enclosure forbidden to non-Hindus.
