<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> early soldier&#146;s monument<br> Harbors, Wharfs &#38; Waterfronts in The Riviera picture - This was created to commemorate those from Antibes who served in WWI and earlier conflicts. I was told by a guide that the sculptor, who had never been in the Army, created the statue using an early glass-backed daguerreotype as a model. Unfortunately, he was looking at the picture from the reverse, and put the soldier&#146;s rifle on the wrong side. It is said that, having formally unveiled the monument and learned of his &#147;unpardonable sin&#148;, he committed suicide. I don&#146;t know whether or not that is an apocryphal tale, but it is credible. </div></nolayer></noembed>
