early soldiers monument
Harbors, Wharfs & Waterfronts in The Riviera picture - This was created to commemorate those from Antibes who served in WWI and earlier conflicts. I was told by a guide that the sculptor, who had never been in the Army, created the statue using an early glass-backed daguerreotype as a model. Unfortunately, he was looking at the picture from the reverse, and put the soldiers rifle on the wrong side. It is said that, having formally unveiled the monument and learned of his unpardonable sin, he committed suicide. I dont know whether or not that is an apocryphal tale, but it is credible.
