To the side of the main entrance to the Catedral Metropolitana is this bronze plaque that claims as Quito's glory the discovery of the Amazon River, it is based on the fact that the expedition commanded by Francisco De Orellana left from Quito and went on to discover and claim the Amazon river for the Spanish Crown. This is one of the main reasons for a series of border military and political disputes between Ecuador and Peru, two fraternal peoples that should have never let the politicians and the military chieftons separate them and use them to justify their existence, fortunately the new generations have been able to recognise this and have ended once and for all this rediculous attitude.
