Man-made Periyar Lake,
Sightseeing in Kerala picture - the centerpiece of the sanctuary at an altitude of 2000 feet, covers an area of 26 sq.kms. The lake was created by the British in 1895 when they built the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River. It is one of oldest dams in India. The lake & river meander around the contours of the wooded hills in the sanctuary providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife.
