The are about 1,000 elephants in the park. Although the best time to visit Periyar, weatherwise, is between October & May, the hot spring months of March, April & May are the best times to sight wild animals because the scarcity of water brings the animals , especially the herds of wild elephants, down to the lake to bathe & frolic in the water. Early morning & evening boat rides usually provide the best chance of viewing animals before they retreat into the jungle.
