One of the pillars of Islam is a pilgrimage to Mecca at some point in life (called Hajj). This is a model of the destination kept in the mosque as a reminder. The Hajj is associated with the life of Muhammad, but the ritual of pilgrimage to Mecca predates Islam, and is considered by Muslims to stretch back to the time of Abraham and Ishmael.
