facial & eye expressions, & hand gestures are important. At one time, only men performed this difficult classical dance. However, women are now carving their niche in this male dominated field. Kathakali songs are sung in the background, usually by two vocalists, & the music is basically percussion instruments such as drums, gongs & cymbals.
