The city of Rhyolite, Nevada sprang up in 1904 to meet the needs of the fortune seekers who arrived to mine the gold that was discovered in the area. At its peak, Rhyolite had around 10,000 inhabitants and was the third largest city in Nevada. The city boasted telephone service, water companies, saloons, hundreds of houses, an opera house, electric street lights, and even a red-light district. Eventually, the mining operations were shut down in 1911 and Rhyolite was abandoned by 1919.
