Pyramid Lake is a remnant from the last ice age, when Lake Lahontan covered much of northwestern Nevada. Despite the fact that the Truckee River flows into it, Pyramid Lake has a salinity level about 1/6th that of salt water, as evaporation is the lake waters only release. While the lake is approximately 188 square miles (487 square kilometers) in area and only 1/10 the size of the Great Salt Lake, it has 25% more volume, due to its depth.
