located on the University of Madras campus across from Marina Beach, was completed in 1873 & is an architectural marvel that blends Indo-Saracenic (Islamic) & Byzantine architectural styles. Note especially the four towers with exquisite domes. At one time, the building housed some university departments as well as the offices of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. Meetings of the senate, academic council & the faculties were held in some of the smaller halls, hence the name. But after the construction of two new buildings, the use of Senate House dwindled & was limited to convocations, exams, & a few classrooms, & even convocations were moved to a new building after 1965. Sadly, the majestic building has fallen into disrepair due to neglect & the ravages of nature. But there seems to be plans afoot to restore this amazing structure, hopefully, to its former glory.
