Anna Memorial Square honors Arignar Annadurai, affectionately called Anna, a former leader of the Dravidian movement, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, & a much respected personality among the people of the state. Anna passed away in 1969 & his remains are buried here in the tranquil square. This attractive gate, depicting converging elephant tusks, leads to the square which is situated at the northern end of Marina Beach. The MGR Memorial is dedicated to the former actor cum politician of Tamil Nadu, MGR Ramachandran. [Chennai is the home of the successful Tamil film industry known as "Kollywood". A record 105 movies were released in 2007. Even more amazing is the fact that there are about 1800 cinema halls located in Tamil Nadu, & nearly 80 of them are located in Chennai - one of them seats more than 3000 people].
