Marina Beach, on the Bay of Bengal, is the most famous beach in Tamil Nadu. Considered to be one of the largest urban beaches in the world, this wide sandy beach stretches over a distance of 12 kms. The entire stretch features numerous statues & monuments both along Beach Road & on the beach. Although bathing & swimming are illegal here (there are no lifeguards), over 1600 people drowned at this beach in 2007 alone. Sadly, the December 26, 2004 tsunami struck the shores of Chennai & the entire coastline, including Marina Beach, was affected. Although it is quite wide, sea waters engulfed all of Marina Beach. Over 200 people died in Chennai as a result of the tsunami.
