San Thome (st) Basilica & Shrine (1893) Sightseeing in Madras picture - is located at the end of Kutchery Road in the Mylapore section of the city. The church was built over the tomb of St Thomas (San Thome in Portuguese) who was martyred here, hence it was named after him. The Catholic church believes that Christianity was first introduced into India by St. Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles. (He was one of the prime witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus.) He had traveled extensively all over the world for 17 years before he arrived in India in 52AD & built 7 churches in the coastal area of Kerela. Then he went to the Indias east coast & finally to Madras (now Chennai) where he lived his last years in a cave on a hill now called St Thomas Mount on the outskirts of Chennai. He was assassinated there in 72AD & the current basilica is built over the place where he was buried & is therefore dedicated to him. [The church is often called Santhome, one word.]
