shrine is one of only three churches in the world that are built over the tomb of an Apostle. The other two are Saint Peter’s in Rome, & Santiago de Compostela cathedral built over the tomb of St. James in Spain. San Thome was raised to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1956, & declared a National Shrine of St. Thomas in 2006.
