is located on Luz Church Road in a tiny corner of Mylapore. (My autorickshaw driver had never heard of this historic church, but he asked around & we eventually found it.) Luz Church, the oldest Catholic church in Chennai (Madras), was built by the Portuguese. As the story goes, when Portuguese sailors landed on the coast here, they saw a bright light shining through a heavily wooded area. They followed that light & built this church on that spot. The church is also called “Kattu Koil” in Tamil which means ‘the church in the forest’. Although it is commonly referred to as Luz Church (luz means light in Portuguese), the official name is “Our Lady of Light church”
