St Mary's Church (sm)
Sightseeing in Madras picture - St Marys Church, located in the fort complex, was completed in 1680 & is one of the oldest surviving churches built by the British in India. It was also the first Anglican Church in Asia. Often referred to as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East', the bomb-proof carved structure was finished with polished lime. The church top was added in 1795, & the sanctuary & vestry were also later additions. The tombstones found within the fort are among the oldest tombstones of British origin in India.
