Council Grove
United States picture - When the Santa Fe Trail first came into use, much of eastern Kansas was still on the raw edge of the frontier. What is now the City of Council Grove but, at that time, was a green spot on the prairie, became a gathering place for traders and, later settlers, headed west. The old council oak tree is now dead and mostly rotted away and sits just out of this picture to the left. Under it, U.S. government representatives purchased the right of transit and safe passage from the local Indian tribes.
