The approaches into the fort looks pretty benign in this photo. Not so fast, wagon traveler! All of that green area surrounding the fort is marshy - soggy and muddy. The hardships of travel on the Santa Fe Trail did not let up until the travelers were inside the gates, and then only to a degree. There was still no hot and cold running water or gourmet dining. Having gotten there, you were still in the wilderness.
