The initial purpose for the northern route of the Santa Fe Trail was trade with the Indian tribes along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The traders brought goods the Indians wanted: pots and pans, mirrors, trinkets, blankets, weapons, and liquor. The Indians brought furs to trade and these were pressed into fur bales as shown here and stored until they could be transported east.
