Many today don't realize it but the Santa Fe Trail was actaully an international route, crossing the United States, territories of the United States, and into Mexico. The Mexican border then crossed what is now central Kansas. Along the trail, that was in modern-day Kearney County and initially at least, the trade and settlement were welcomed by the Mexican government.
