This was one of the areas around Council Grove, where wagon trains gathered and organized before departing on the trail. Situated on the west side of the Neosho River, many travelers got their first real taste of the difficulties and dangers along the trail, At any time, but especially during the spring floods, crossing the Neosho with loaded wagons was an enterprise both difficult and dangerous.
