<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> The Old Soldier, Fort Riley<br> United States picture - Travel throughout the west was frought with peril, not the least of which were the native tribes who, for some reason, objected to the invasion of their homelands. For a long period of time, the 9th and 10th U. S. Cavalry (the Buffalo Soldiers) were based at Fort Riley and spread out over the countryside to try and protect travelers from the U.S. into the territories and into what was then Mexico but is now a major portion of the SW U.S. As a matter of interest unrelated to this trail, once this area was relatively pacified, the 9th and 10th moved from Fort Riley to southern Arizona and served the same purpose among the Apaches. </div></nolayer></noembed>
