King (6000) class locomotives were introduced by the GWR in 1927. 30 Kings were produced and at the time and for some time after were the most powerful engines working with the GWR. Each had a boiler pressure of 250 lb per sq in superheated and produced a tractive effort of 40,300 lb at 85% boiler pressure. The driving wheels were 6ft 6in in diameter and the cylinders measured 16 1/4 in by 28 in. In full working order with tender they weighted 135tons 14 cwt.
