Swettenham Pier (1904),
Sightseeing in Penang picture - located at the north end of Weld Quay, was named after Sir Frank Swettenham, the first British Resident-General of the Federated Malay States. The original pier, which was part of Weld Quays massive land reclamation project, was completed in 1904. It had a berth of 600 square feet, room enough for a large liner or two ordinary steamers, & was used by international passenger cruise vessels. The Langkawi ferry left from here as well. The pier, including the passenger terminal, is currently being redeveloped into an international cruise terminal to cater to larger cruise vessels. The 450m T-shaped berth will be able to handle vessels carrying more than 2,000 passengers. Land-based facilities will eventually include hotels, shopping outlets, & handicraft shops.
