The new Church Street Pier
Sightseeing in Penang picture - replaces the old one which was built in 1897, in an era when the Penang Channel was a much busier & more colorful waterway. In those days, the waterfront was jammed with sampans, perahus, junks, steamships & cruise vessels of varying sizes. Before the construction of the present ferry terminal (adjacent), the Church Street Pier was used by motorcar ferries, then by small boats. Like several other jetties that lined the waterfront, it eventually closed down & for many years it was a run-down, abandoned pier. It's attractive new replacement is a proud addition to the revival of Weld Quay.
