was erected in memory of James Richardson Logan, a lawyer who championed the rights of the non-whites in Penang. For example, he skillfully defended the case of an Indian planter against the East India Company, & when the authorities attempted to suppress the activities of the Chinese clans, labeling them secret societies, it was James Logan who helped the Chinese merchants in submitting petitions. This resulted in greater rights & recognition for their organizations. James & his brother Abraham, who had studied law in Edinburgh, came to Penang where they began a law practice. They moved to Singapore to practice law in 1842, but James returned to Penang in 1853. After his death in 1869, the residents amassed a fund to erect this memorial in his honour. Logan Road was also named after him. The Memorial portrays the four virtues - Temperance, Wisdom, Fortitude and Justice.
