cls2 - a peek inside
Sightseeing in Penang picture - Within the grounds is Government House, the oldest British administrative building in Malaysia. In fact, the convent acquired Government House & a 7-acre site surrounding it in 1859 when they needed to expand. The complex grew to include the Old Chapel (1867), the Old Hall, cloisters & classrooms (1882) , & further extensions in 1901, 1929 & 1934, by which time there was no more room to grow. In the beginning, Convent Light Street also functioned as an orphanage & boarding school, with some boarders from royal & wealthy families from as far away as Thailand. The Convent still functions today & has fully adopted mainstream education.
