In the early days, the clay was dug out with pick & shovel, then stored in clay piles just west of the plant according to its composition. When needed, the clay was then transferred to the plant by cart & mule. When the mule & cart system wasn’t able to keep up with the demand, a portable narrow-gauge rail line (NGR) was used.
