(sepia tone) The “school ma’rms” of the day taught elementary reading, writing, ‘rithmetic, some science and history, and the principles of morality and good behaviour to any children and pre-teens who wanted to learn. Here you see almost everything that they needed (but where’s the “hickory stick”?) The interpreter gave a thorough and interesting explanation of how she performed her job.
