Printing actually began in Upper Canada in 1793, with the naming of a King&#146;s Printer and publishing of the official Upper Canada Gazette, from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Printing plates were prepared by hand by typesetters, using lead or sometimes wooden letters stored in two wooden cases &#150; the lower one for ordinary letters, and the upper one for capitals.
