This represents a small commercial printing shop that also published a weekly newspaper back in the 1860s. Printing actually began in Upper Canada in 1793, with the naming of a King’s Printer and publishing of the official Upper Canada Gazette, from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Printing plates were prepared by hand by typesetters, using lead or sometimes wooden letters stored in two wooden cases – the lower one for ordinary letters, and the upper one for capitals. Now you know the origin of the terms “UPPER CASE” and “lower case”.
