This region, with 1173Km2, is situated at the heart of the vast *alentejana* plain, that constitutes the basic unit of the southern part of Portugal. Due to its topography it is sufficiently poor in water. Beja (City) is situated in the vestigial mount *gabro*, it raises 277 meters and it can be considered the center of the plain. In this region, during the period of middle of June to the middle of September, rarerely occurs precipitation and when it thus it is always a local heavy shower. Generally it is always a clean sky or a little darkened. Some times, the temperature can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in July and August. From middle or ends of September until March rainy periods occur. From April on it comes the rain (heavy shower and thunderstorm). In December, January and February, it can be very cold. The lowest values of the temperature are 5 or 6 degrees Celsius (negative).
