This cannon, one of the largest ever made, was cast in 1586. I suspect, though I have no evidence for this, that it may have been made for its psychological impact as much as for its fire power. Actually, it has never been fired. The cannon has a length of 5.34 meters, weighs 40 tons and has a calibre of nearly a meter (890 mm). The cannon balls in front of the cannon were made for demonstrative purposes only since it originally had been intended for the use of stone-case shot. Whatever its military purpose may have been, it certainly is an object of some considerable beauty.
