This defensive fortification, had been built over a number of centuries. It is on top of a steep cliff in the very centre of Moscow. The wall's construction had been begun in the early 14th century, for even that far back, it had been an important place of government. Today the Kremlin contains within its wall several churches and palaces. The latter hold the residences of important government officials as well as large assembly halls, the place were decisions were and are being made. The Russian word "kremlin" means fortification or citadel. There are many kremlins in Russia, but "The Kremlin", was this particular citadel. A place designed to keep out unfriendly visitors. This had been the place of government for centuries. The government of many Tsars, of Lenin and other Communist leaders, and finally, the place of government in this, Post-Communist present.
