It was when I came out of the cathedral, aware of its huge size, that I asked the question if the golden, sunny gleam that reflected from its domes were really achieved with "honest to goodness gold" that I discovered that indeed, there was no modern, hi-tech deception being used. If it looked golden on Russian churches, it was gold!
