I do not remember seeing this or thhe following painting at the Tretyakov Gallery, although they may well have been there. I am using them here as examples of Repin's realistic approach to his subjects. This painting, called "The Barge Haulers on the Volga" clearly reveals the backbreakingly hard work that was expected of such labourers.
