The various red towers visible across the whole picture,are a part of the Kremlin's defensive wall. That it had been built with such emphasis on defensive security is not surprising if one remembers Russia's long history of invasions and wars. In more recent times, there had been the Napoleonic wars, the invasion by Hitler and finally the conflict known as the "Cold War." However two-sided the causes of the last conflict have been, it is not, perhaps, entirely surprising that such a fortification remains the seat of the Russian government.
